How to turn off Google instant and auto complete solution that works

There have been posts about this since 2010…Google is not listening and a lot of users are going back to Bing and other search engines. So here is a solution that works in 2012 because so many people simply love to hate Google instant! I wonder why such a large company can keep adding such intrusive widgets while they claim to want to increase “user experience”…this seems to be the case of most mega giants like Paypal, Ebay and MSN. They always change things for improvements but they really just become annoyances.  But this trend is not unique,  I’ve noticed that other websites are also getting into that autofill technology, trying to type things for you before you think…I find this trend very annoying and hope it won’t keep gaining popularity with web developers (not users!)…in my opinion they have been going backwards over the years making things more and more complicated for nothing. Try this solution and see if it works for you, if not please post a comment so I can know how effective this method is over a multitude of configurations, operating systems and browsers.

This short vid shows you how to turn it off in Firefox

In Firefox any version (correct me if it doesn’t work in other versions and I’ll correct this post), but this should work for FireFox 3.o and up:

Select: Tools >> Options >> make sure you are on the general tab, go to the Home Page field >> Enter:

https://www.google.com/webhp?complete=0

You can change the .com to whatever suits you, you country extention like google.ca or google.co.uk

In Internet Explorer:

Select: Tools >> Internet options >>Make sure you are on the homepage tab, enter:

https://www.google.ca/webhp?complete=0

in the text field

You can change the .com to whatever suits you, you country extension like google.ca or

In Safari:

Select Preferences >> Make sure you are on the general tab

In the Home Page field enter:

https://www.google.ca/webhp?complete=0

You can change the .com to whatever suits you, you country extension like google.ca or

In Google Chrome and ironically this is the hardest one to change…

Click on the wrench icon on the far top right
Go to options
Hook “Open The Homepage” on the On Startup section/tab
Hook “Open This Page” on the Home page section/tab
In the text field put this:

https://www.google.com/webhp?complete=0

  3. The problem with that company is that they try to impose “user experience” but they actually destroy it…

Just a matter of time before they fall

  4. Hi Lai, Lai,

Did you try setting up your own country extension? Not sure what you mean by the main Google page? The steps above worked for me on all these browers.

  5. Thanks a load for this – as someone who has been in the iT business for more years than I care to remember, I’m getting less and less enamoured with companies deciding that they know what we want.
The most significant failing of system developers is assuming that they know what is best for the user. I should know as for too many years I was that soldier!

Many thanks once more – a small step back to sanity

    • Hi Sean,

Did the tool work for you? What operating system are you using? I’m thinking of build a stop Google auto instant tool for Apple and Linux.
